Male bushcrickets are in charge when it comes to sex

Dec. 14, 2012 ? All a question of timing: When bushcrickets mate, the male attaches a sticky package, the so-called spermatophore, to the female's abdomen. Alongside the sperm themselves, this 'bridal present' consists of a protein-rich mass that the female eats after mating. It then takes several hours for the sperm to find their way into the female's reproductive tract. But, who decides when that will happen? A study by the Bielefeld biologists Professor Dr. Klaus Reinhold and Dr. Steven Ramm suggests that it is the male who determines the dynamics of this process even when he has long 'hopped off' somewhere else.

They published their results at the beginning of December in the online first version of the journal Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology.

In contrast to direct sperm transfer, the use of a spermatophore could grant the female more influence over the fertilization or non-fertilization of her eggs. However, the results of the Bielefeld study cast doubt on this assumption. They suggest a high degree of male control over this decisive stage in reproduction. For their study, Professor Dr. Klaus Reinhold and Dr. Steven Ramm from Bielefeld University paired males and females from two subspecies of the bushcricket Poecilimon veluchianus in whom the time between pairing and sperm transfer differ. Whereas in the subspecies Poecilimon veluchianus minor, sperm are transferred within the first three hours, the transfer in Poecilimon veluchianus veluchianus starts only after four hours. If the two subspecies are interbred -- the researchers thought -- then the number of transferred sperm after three hours would indicate whether it is the male or the female who determines how long this transfer takes.

The researchers mated nine to twelve pairs in each of the four possible combinations of Poecilimon veluchianus minor and Poecilimon veluchianus veluchianus. Three hours after mating, they examined how many sperm they could find in the female's reproductive tract. The result: the sperm from the males of the 'faster' subspecies Poecilimon veluchianus minor could be found in the females of both subspecies. In contrast, the males in the 'slower' sub-species Poecilimon veluchianus veluchianus had transferred almost no sperm at all to either type of female.

The researchers conclude from this experiment that the males control the speed of transfer over the sperm package. However, this does not automatically lead to the conclusion that the female is powerless. Females can also influence whether sperms are transferred by how quickly they eat the spermatophore. In addition, the larger the male, the larger the size of the sperm package, and this influences how long the females need to consume the protein. As a result, the sperm have more time to transfer to the female -- and the female's eggs have a greater chance of being fertilized by a 'high-quality' male. Professor Reinhold stresses, 'Our findings show that the females do not determine the transfer -- not that they could not do so.'

Ford Reveals Full-Size Transit Work Van

? Although the Econoline van that?s been in production for a staggering 51 years will stick around for a few more, Ford unveiled its replacement today: the full size global Transit.

The new vans are a far different animal than the outgoing models, and take their cues from the European Ford Transit that?s served overseas for decades. The Transit moves away from body-on-frame construction to a unitized body made of boron steel for durability and lighter weight. It will be available in a wide range of configurations. You can mix and match between two wheelbases, three roof heights, an extra-long tail option, and chassis cab.

The smallest model mimics the current Econoline in size, but these Ford get seriously big from there. In the Transit Jumbo (a name so great we had to mention it), interior volume is roughly double the standard Transit's 248.3 cubic feet at a staggering 496 cubic feet. Passenger seating goes from just two up front to a whopping fifteen-passenger version.?

Powertrain options are significantly different. Gone are the two V-8 and V-10. Instead the three engines will include the base 3.7-liter V-6 and 3.5-liter twin turbo V-6 Ecoboost, both fitted to the F150 already, and an inline five-cylinder turbo diesel. Although Ford has not released the specs, in other markets that diesel makes 175 hp and a whopping 397 lb-ft of torque. There?s also a CNG prep package. All engines are backed by the same six-speed automatic found in the F-series pickups and drive the rear axle in single or dual rear-wheel setups.?

? The interior appointments are a sea change compared to the Econoline. The styling, materials, and seating choices are reminiscent of the Fusion or Fiesta?car-like and comfortable, and much different than the gruff, hard cabin of old. Since these vehicles are mostly used as work vans, work options are available including Ford Work Solutions, Crew Chief and other productivity software. The van also gets dragged into the modern era with a full compliment of airbags all around, trailer sway control, and a curve control braking system. ?

?If you need a huge van or a small apartment in Manhattan, look for the Transit to start hitting dealerships toward the end of next year. Expect more specific details about powertrain and fuel economy in the spring.

Venezuela's Chavez "in stable condition" after operation

DEAR ABBY: I have been married for 14 years to a man who had two failed marriages. I never felt insecure in my married life until I read his answers to a Yahoo Answers poll that asked, "Do you dream about the one that got away?" and, "Have you found the love of your life?"My husband responded that he thinks about her very often, especially on her birthday and Valentine's Day. To the other question he replied he had found the love of his life, but the relationship had ended in divorce, which he admitted was his fault.I know he was talking about his first wife. I feel so sad and insecure. ...

Citizen science more than a century later: Ordinary people go online to track Gulf oil spill

Dec. 10, 2012 ? In the summer of 1854 a doctor named John Snow tracked London's deadly outbreak of cholera to contaminated water coming from a public well -- the now famous Broad Street pump. But Snow's observations had to wend their way through the annals of science and took years to make an impact on the public health. Now, more than a century later, ordinary people can go online and report observations about public health problems and disasters in real time.

In a just-published study a researcher at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) reports on this new form of "citizen science," concluding that it can help modern-day public health officials assess health and environmental threats, such as those posed by the 2010 Gulf oil disaster. The researcher studied reports to an online Oil Spill Map and discovered that citizen science can red-flag potential hazards quickly and offers very specific local information that often fails to make it into official scientific reports.

"Thousands of people logged onto the Spill Map in the days and months following the Gulf oil spill and reported smoke, tainted seafood, foul odors linked to the oil dispersant and other problems as they were occurring on the front lines," said the author of the study Sabrina McCormick, PhD, associate professor of environmental health at SPHHS. "This reporting by ordinary people promises to be a powerful new way of conducting research and helping officials respond appropriately to disasters." McCormick published the study online December 10, 2012 in the scientific journal Ecology and Society.

The study looks back at the disaster that unfolded in the spring of 2010 when an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and spilled nearly five million barrels of oil into the water before it was capped. The company in charge of the clean-up operation then used more than 2.1 million gallons of a chemical dispersant in order to clean up the spill. Since that time, clean-up workers, fishermen and local residents have sought medical attention for the kinds of symptoms that can arise from exposure to crude oil or chemicals in the dispersant, McCormick said.

Official reports of the disaster typically have reported few health risks but have not collected the comprehensive evidence that is needed to fully understand the consequences of the oil spill, McCormick said. She undertook the study to investigate whether a Spill Map created by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade (LABB) and other environmental justice groups would help fill in that gap. The Spill Map includes data from citizen science organizations as well as individuals who texted in reports or went online and noted problems as they occurred.

In this study, McCormick reviewed more than 2,600 online reports and conducted in-person interviews with people in the fishing industry, those working to clean up the oil and residents of Louisiana five months after the spill and again in September 2011. She found that the Spill Map helped capture reports of spill impacts, such as oil in the water, dying wildlife or health problems in real time, and included information from isolated parts of the Louisiana Bayou--places that are often not central to the official studies conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and others.

For example, LABB gave citizens special buckets to collect air samples even in very remote areas. The data from those air samples got logged onto the Spill Map and could be added in with eyewitness accounts of oil slicked water and crucial health and environmental information. In contrast, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency also collected air samples but did so mostly in highly populated regions and thus did not monitor pollution in some of the tiny fishing villages along the Coastline, McCormick said.

In addition, the Spill Map quickly gave an account of the health problems people were experiencing as the disaster unfolded. McCormick said that people in the region texted or logged onto the map and gave accounts of rashes, respiratory problems, headaches and other problems they believed were linked to exposure to the oil or the dispersant.

Citizen science does not take the place of the traditional studies, in which trained scientists gather data and then quantify the human health or environmental consequences, McCormick says. Still, she says that the data gathered by many people on the front lines can offer important minute-to-minute information that officials can use to protect human health and the environment from an ongoing disaster.

Firebrand pol calls for total SAfrica mine strike

(AP) ? Firebrand politician Julius Malema is calling for a national strike in all South African mines to demand the removal of the leadership of the country's National Union of Mineworkers.

Thousands of striking miners at a gold mine blowing on vuvuzelas, whistles, and carrying traditional sticks responded enthusiastically to Malema's comments Tuesday.

"There must be a national strike. They have been stealing this gold from you. Now it is your turn. You want your piece of gold. These people are making billions from these mines," Malema said, referring to black billionaires and the white minority that controls the economy. "What you must do, you just put down the tools and stop production."

Malema won loud cheers when he said: "You must be treated like human beings. You must also be respected."

IAMBRIGITTE: Product Review: Revlon Photoready Eye Primer + ...

I'm a big fan of highlighters, but in my case I use it only on the undereye area. ?It's a must-have for me and I also use it on my clients. ?I apply it right after I'm done with the eye shadow application, before I do the contouring and other finishing touches. ?

I've tried several highlighters already: YSL and The Body Shop's (which I reviewed here) to name a few. ?I've also used that of Revlon's, the Age Defying Spa concealer which have been my HG for quite a time. ?So when I got this Primer + Highlighter from Revlon, a few months back, I'm just happy because it"s like hitting two birds in one stone.

Revlon Photoready Eye Primer + Highlighter

?"Smoothes, perfects and brightens eye area by reducing the appearance of fine lines and crease on lids?use anytime, anywhere on face as a brightening 'pick me up'!"

Like the other highlighters I've used, this comes in a click-style pen: twist the bottom and the liquid comes out of the brush tip. ?

swatch

It comes in a single shade - peachy pink and at first look you'd think it wouldn't work for those with dark skins. ?As highlighter, it won't. But as a corrector, it would. ?Just top it off with the person's shade of powder and it will nicely correct any pigmentation under the eye. ?

Unlike the other Photoready stuff, I don't see glitter on it. If it does have, they might be super tiny to be seen by the naked eye.

after blending

As a primer, it does help in bringing out the vibrancy of the eye shadow:

Left: With Revlon Primer + Highlighter
Right: Without

Let's check how it fares when used as an eye primer:

bare lids

apply it using the brush and blend it using your ring finger

after:

It evens out the skin tone on my lid, and provides a smooth slate for my eye shadow

With eye shadow on:

I love how it makes blending a lot easier. ?I've tried other primers before and blending it in can be such a pain, leaving my lids looking chalky and uneven. ?This one really makes the lid looking soft and bright, just top it with powder and you can leave it just like that if you prefer.?

It does its job of keeping my eye shadow stay put the entire day. There's a tiny bit of creasing, but nothing that a good smudging using your ring finger won't be able to fix. And I'm still thinking that my uber-rich eye cream is sometimes the culprit. ?

Maybe.?

Now as a highlighter:

With the previous photo as reference, you'll see that I have dark undereyes. ?Well, that's the result of getting only a max of 4-5hrs of sleep on most days! ?So yeah, don't be like me!

Brush it on the undereye area and again, using your ring finger, blend it in using gentle tapping motions

the result:

see how it brightens and lightens the area?

As with all liquid, you need to set it so I top it off with loose translucent powder.

I've read some reviews that it doesn't help on the brightening side. ?And that when they try to blend it, it sort of disappears. ?I've experienced that on my first few tries, most especially when I tried blending it with a sponge. ?What I did was to wait for a few seconds after brushing it on, and then using my ring finger, I blend it in using tapping motions. ?Again, tap..don't swipe. It works for me, might work for you too!

For a roundup:

What I like:

?As with other Revlon Photoready products, the black packaging is really nice. ? Unlike that of the Age Defying concealer, the markings on this one don't fade.

The applicator brush. ?And this also dispenses just the right amount of product each time you twist

It's a good eye primer, actually it's a great one! ?I love how it smoothens and evens out my lids.

It works as a highlighter and a corrector

Priced at Php700++ (more or less, I forgot how much) it's pretty much affordable. ?And you get two products at a price of one, a good deal na.

It doesn't settle on fine lines

No allergic reactions.?

You only need a small amount to work with. ?So yeah, the above photos where I have the swatches are definitions of "too much" LOL.

I can use it pretty much on anybody. ?Well, not as a highlighter though. ?But as a corrector.

What I don't like:

Hmm, nothing.

Will I repurchase?

The first one I got as a gift, I've already bought two more. ?One for my clients and another one for me. ?

If I am to choose between this and the Revlon Age Defying Spa concealer, I would have to say I'll go for the latter. Just because it has anti-aging properties. ?It works as a highlighter and corrector too, but I haven't tried using it as a primer. ?But why choose when you can have both. ?Ahh, let's not complicate things, shall we!?

^_^

Nielsen: Majority Of Mobile U.S. Teens Now Own Smartphones

smartphone-gfxNielsen?announced in May that more than half of U.S. mobile owners now owned smartphones. Today that metric has grown again, going from 50.4% to 55.5%. But the more interesting figure in the firm's release of July 2012 data is not this incremental increase -- although it's notable as an indication of just how fast the smartphone market is growing. It's the fact that today, the majority of mobile-owning American teens (58%) now own smartphones. That's up from roughly a third (36%) in 2011.

Creating Playful Spaces: Setting Up a Child's Project Area ? Playful ...

Creating Playful Spaces: Setting Up a Child's Project Area

I am really excited that Annie?Riechmann from Alphabet Glue and Bird and Little Bird is with us today to launch our Creating Playful Spaces week! Annie is sharing the inspiring project area that she created for her daughter. Be sure to check back each day this week to discover tips and resources for creating engaging spaces for the children in your life. To celebrate, we are offering a 30% discount on the Playful Learning Spaces eCourse (see coupon below for details).

For the last few years, our family has taken up residence in a small house near the local hospital where my medical student husband spends a lot of his time.? Being near to the hospital means that we get to see him more than we otherwise might, but small space living as a family of four (with a myriad of pets) can sometimes be a challenge. Add to this the changing space needs of growing children, and I find that I often need to reevaluate how we are using our space and what we could change to do a better job of making our home a creative and useable, but also peaceful environment.

Recently, I came across Lori Pickert?s fantastic book, Project-Based Homeschooling, and found myself completely overcome with inspiration. I?m not currently homeschooling my daughter, but we do incorporate a lot of projects into our time together at home. Lori?s book made me realize that I really needed to make some changes to my daughter?s art space to bring it more in line with her needs as an older child (now eight) doing more sophisticated projects and artwork.

Creating Playful Spaces: Setting Up a Child's Project Area

My idea was to increase my daughter?s actual useable surface area, while also increasing her storage for materials and giving her a little bit of room for display. Oh, and I was hoping to be able to fit all of this into an area of our living room that is about four and a half feet wide, and to do it using only stuff that we already had around the house. The medical school family bit also means that our budget is tight and that there isn?t a lot of extra money to spend on cute organizational tools, fun though they might be.

I settled on moving our existing art table to a small section of wall that is adjacent to some built-in bookshelves in our living room.? Having her project space in a central area of the house is important to me; I have never been one to keep the living room decor ?adult only.? The kids live here too, and I feel strongly that their activities should be folded into the common spaces in our home.? Plus, we literally have no where else to put them. We hung small display shelves on the wall above her table, and she immediately filled them with favorite collections, such as her jar of beach glass and a row of pretty minerals in decorative jars. One shelf is dedicated to some clay models that she has been working on (for a diorama about penguins that she wants to make). I also hung a small bulletin board for hanging notes, displaying work in progress or for keeping lists of materials that would be useful to have for completing a project.

Creating Playful Spaces: Setting Up a Child's Project Area

I cleared out some no longer needed books from the shelves next to her table, and instead, filled the space with a collection of things that she might need easy access to for creative endeavors of all sorts. There are field guides and reference books, magnifying glasses, science kits recently sent by some friends of ours, and some boxes of paper.? But from her perspective, the best part of the newly organized area is the fact that she now has free access to all the household art supplies. Her baskets and suitcases contain ?real? paint (good quality acrylics and watercolors), as well as modeling clay, high quality markers and colored pencils and various rolls of tape; all materials I may have been more cautious with in the past. In her book, Lori makes mention of the fact that children respond to trust about their ability to use high quality materials responsibly by producing high quality work and I am already finding this to be true.

Here is a list of what I?ve included in Mariam?s project space:

  • pencils, hand sharpeners and erasers
  • colored pencils, markers and crayons
  • modeling clay and tools
  • stickers, labels, tape, balls of string, clothespins
  • paper, cardstock, stationery and bits of cardboard
  • paint and brushes
  • field guides, reference books, plant presses in two sizes
  • a bug house, magnifying glasses
  • glue sticks and liquid glues
  • oil and chalk pastels
  • card games
  • a ?project journal? where she can keep track of project ideas, make sketches, take notes
  • a basket for storage of work in progress and for materials being used in the space on a more temporary basis

Creating Playful Spaces: Setting Up a Child's Project Area

In all, we are already finding that having easy access to a variety of materials that are well-organized can do great things for productivity, enjoyment of creating and for clean-up too.? My daughter is encouraged by her independence with using these materials and, I?m pretty pleased to have been able to find a way to incorporate a more organized project space into our small living room by making good use of what was already here.

How the Internet Will Change Personal Finance

I started my adult life studying accounting and finance in Perth, Australia, dropping out to start my first tech company in 1999, raising millions in venture capital before my 22nd birthday, running the startup through the boom and bust of the early 2000s and well into the subprime meltdown before finally walking away from an enterprise software company that counted over 90% of Australian banks as clients. I moved to the US to start again, this time focused on consumers.

The Internet has created an unprecedented amount of opportunity to redefine the personal finance space but as at September 2012 the landscape is still hugely dominated by antiquated and enterprise-centric solutions. The lion?s share of consumer and personal finance software interactions still happen on systems developed decades ago, such ACH, SWIFT, Maestro/Cirrus and the ATM networks.

The most successful personal finance software platform in the US,?Mint.com,?still counts barely 3% of the US population as ?active? users (where active is defined as using the service at least once a month)?and is virtually inactive with the remaining 1.9 billion Internet users.

Clearly the Internet has not changed personal finance. Not yet.

Put another way, there is no dominant brand that the Internet associates with personal finance in the same we think of eBay, Amazon, Google and Facebook when we think of classifieds, shopping, search and social.

So how will the Internet change the face of personal finance becomes the real question and to properly comment on this we first need to define the Internet.

The internet is no longer simply the any-to-any connection of computers storing data, enabling any individual access to unprecedented information. Dropbox founder Drew Houston framed his massively successful company as not so much building a product or service for users, but for the Internet itself. This in a way represents what the Internet is becoming: an array of services on which applications can be built.

Figuring out how this Internet will?change personal finance requires a look at the services coming online that are going to form the building blocks of any new personal finance applications. For example, I see these companies as the leading providers in their respective areas:

Historical Transactional Data: Yodlee?aggregates all the historical transactional data from every major bank in the world, enabling Mint and the slew of ?me too? products. Their pricing and structure is prohibitive from the type of explosive growth we expect on the Internet. In time I believe they will change their model which will power the next generation of personal financial reporting tools.

Online Payments:?Dwolla. Especially in the US, online payments represent one of the most limiting parts of the stack available to build out personal finance applications. The integration and availability of real-time data flows representing personal consumer transactions will enable functionality not unlike that seen in auto or health today, which live on?similar?real-time data feeds.

Offline Payments:?Square. Point of sale technology is yet to be truly disrupted. Last month Starbucks invested a token amount in Square and agreed to roll it out to their 6,800 stores in the US. This represents the first major step towards truly connecting the point of sale in the real world and the Internet.

Banking:?Simple?(formerly BankSimple) is the first full-service bank built from the ground up as a technology company, with a mobile-focused banking experience. Simple will not so much redefine banking for everyone as reset the bar for how technologically progressive a bank needs to be.

Once these building blocks made by these companies (and those that will imitate them) begin to take hold you will start to see true innovation in personal finance. This innovation will be centered around data and decisions.

Personal finance is software that the mainstream needs, but?doesn?t?love. No one loves logging into their bank account but most accept that they need to know how much money they have as a binary indicator of whether they can do whatever it is they want to do next.

Personal finance tools that are yet to evolve will take this binary indicator far further and, by pulling in real-time data ? such as historical transactions, online payments, offline payments and banking ? will provide meaningful input to help people take control of their personal finances.

In much the same way as GPS-based navigational systems have improved as raw data has become more available and have become more?ubiquitous?as the input costs drop (physical units & GPS service), so too will personal finance applications become less and less something we go into and more something that simply follows us around.

Once this happens we will (as you can observe with any Gen Y or below) end up trusting the machine more than the person it replaces. In the end personal finance decisions, particularly those relating to our income, spending and debt, will be made only by first consulting the tool.

When your personal finance application makes it to the front page of your mobile device alongside Twitter, Facebook and Google, you will know we have arrived.

Until that point there is a brave new world out there to be created in personal finance. It may not hold the same allure or sex appeal as that which has come before it but inevitably one company will dominate this category too.

Watch this space.

DinnDinn An App For Your TasteBuds | Founders Interview - TechZulu

We told you about young twins behind Social network LAGbook, Today we caught up with two 19 year-old entrepreneurs from Naperville, Illinois. Kyler W. Juckins and Jeremy A. Markham coincidentally were both born on the same day and attended the same high school and now attend the same college!

Juckins founded DinnDinn, an app changing the way we taste and ch0ose the best burger shop in town.

TechZulu wanted to know just what DinnDinn is?all about!?

What is DinnDinn and Why the Name?

DinnDinn is a virtual fridge for all the dishes, drinks, and desserts you love or hate! It allows you to follow your friends, celebrities, and food connoisseurs to see what food they love or hate, take their recommendations and express your opinion too! On DinnDinn you can become ?TasteBuds? with other users by following them and from there you can see their ?fridge?, tastes, and TasteBuds too! We chose the name DinnDinn because it is something that everyone young and old can relate to.

When Was It Launched?

DinnDinn launched on Tuesday, August 28 2012.

Who Are The Founders And What Are Their Backgrounds?

Jeremy A. Markham, a sophomore in college majoring in Finance and minoring in Chinese and?Kyler W. Juckins also a sophomore in college majoring in Political Science and minoring in International Relations.

What Does DinnDinn Do?

DinnDinn gives its users a virtual fridge where they can upload dishes, drinks, and desserts they love or hate to share with other users.

Why Food?

We chose food because we have great love for good food and we also have a lot of experience in the food industry. Both of us have worked in restaurants and we have multiple family members with experience ranging from fine dining to fast food.

What is The Story Behind The App?

We were eating in Kyler?s kitchen, and asked each other how we can connect with our friends through food and dining. It all started from that one question.?After about a year and a half of working on ideas and how we can make DinnDinn successful, DinnDinn finally launched on August 28th.

What Is Your Business Model?

Unfortunately we can?t give too much information about how we?re going to monetize DinnDinn, but what we can say is that the dynamics of web 3.0 will be our guide!

Who or Where is Your Target User ?

We target a younger audience than our competitors and will initially be launching across the United States.

Have You Had Any Challenges?

Up to this point we haven?t had to overcome too many big hurdles. We?ve experienced challenges when it comes to having to manage time between work, school, and other jobs. When your company is just starting out there is a lot of work to do not to mention trying to grow your customer base, which in this case means gaining traction with users. This is our dream, though, so there?s no challenge that wont be worth overcoming.

Any Competition?

We do have one main competitor that?s been around about two and a half years and they currently have over two million users but that does not worry us. Next?month we are doing our formal launch in the United States and we are adding cool new features, so we are strong.

Any Funding Yet and How Much?

At the moment we have not raised any funds yet but we started with Founders Capital.

Any User Feedback?

?I absolutely love this app! Such a cool idea and concept! Can?t wait to add tons of pictures and get a lot going on in my fridge! I?ve been waiting for something like this! 100% happy? By Kshieh on the App Store

- ?Love how easy it is to use and to see the recommendations of my tastebuds!!!? By Contessamm on the App Store

- ?DinnDinn shines by allowing users and ?Tastebuds? the opportunity to review a dish, drink, or dessert without any grey area. You either love it or hate it. Plan and simple. DinnDinn, allows restaurants to shine by focusing in on what?s important to guests. To many times food reviews lose track of what?s important (the food) and tend to settle on a grey area of happiness. DinnDinn with its ease of use and creative ideas (fridge & tounge) make it a must have app for all foodies. Keep up the great work.? By Kolin on the Google Play store.

Checkout out DinnDinn and let us know what your Tastebuds love or hate.

Get A Rewarding Career By Enrolling In A Massage Course And Other

Becoming a massage therapist is certainly not for everyone; you have to possess the right personality for you to find satisfaction in such a job and you should also have the right mindset towards providing service to others for you to be good at this profession. However, if you choose to pursue a career in massage therapy, you can enjoy immense benefits, both intangible ones and in your finances.

If you are interested in a career in massage therapy, the first thing you should do is seek a school that offers certification training in the field that you have chosen. Graduating from a school that offers a massage course can ensure that you will get a good job in a reputable facility without any hassle; don't risk your future by enrolling in less expensive schools that have dubious standings - make sure that the training institution you sign up with is fully recognised by an official council so that you can reap the benefits of your training.

There are many advantages that come with being a massage therapist, and foremost among these is having the opportunity to interact with different types of people and at the same time, help them. As a massage therapist, your goal is to relieve people of their pain, anxieties, and stress through the power of touch. Although that might seem like a very simple goal, for the people you service this is actually a big deal; a little relief from all these troublesome sensations can greatly improve the quality of their life. Very few professions can change a person's life the way being a massage therapist does.

Of course, the rewards that come with a career in therapy are not limited to personal fulfillment and satisfaction. Massage therapy and reflexology courses that schools offer can actually pave the way to a career that is financially rewarding. In addition to getting good remuneration for your services, a job as a massage therapist is also very secure; there is now a growing recognition for the benefits of massage, both in the medical field and maintaining personal well-being, and as such, the demand for massage therapists is increasing.

Lastly, pursuing a career in massage therapy can help open other possible career paths in the future. For instance, learning about sports massage can lead to a career as a fitness or dance instructor, or you can become a nutritionist to complement your knowledge in therapy. An expert of the School of Natural Therapy is one example of an all-around therapist and fitness expert. So if you want to achieve more, why not try a career in therapy? Being a massage therapist will not just help you make the first step towards greater career satisfaction and success, it also provides a gateway towards personal growth.

The many wonderful rewards of being a massage therapist awaits you by simply signing up for an ITEC massage course. You can even use the knowledge you obtain as a stepping stone in becoming yet another kind of specialist and earn even more money.

Self Improvement Month: Self Assessment |

  • Self Improvement Month: Self Assessment

Self Improvement WordleThis month is Self Improvement Month. All this month I will do a weekly post to help you improve yourself and get organized.

This week?s post is Self Assessment. Take time this week to do a self inventory of what you want to improve about yourself. Before you can get your house in order you must first get you in order.

Here are 5 things you can do to assess yourself.

  1. Look at why you do what you do. What do you think contributes to the disorganization you are experiencing?
  2. Identify your weaknesses. What can you improve on? What will you need help with?
  3. Identify your strengths. What are you really good at?
  4. Set a personal goal for improvement. What do you want to improve about you personally and by when?
  5. Forgive and let go. Mental clutter contributes to home clutter. By letting go of past hurts and moving toward the future you free up your mind and therefore can focus on organizing your home with a clearer head.

Next week we will talk about doing a home assessment. Until then take what you have learned about yourself and make the necessary adjustments.

Late night hosts: God, Clinton were DNC stars

Comedy Central

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

The late-night talk show hosts were in agreement Thursday night. The stars of the Democratic National Convention were God and Bill Clinton.

Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert both had fun with the Democrats flip-flopping on the inclusion of the Lord in their political platform.

?I have faith in a God who?s not too insecure, who doesn?t freak out if you don?t mention his name enough,? Stewart said.

He also had fun with the process itself, which saw the Democrats conduct a voice vote approving the change multiple times before they got a result that maybe, sorta-kinda sounded somewhat close to being a two-thirds majority -- if you assumed that many "yes" voters were whispering. Surely the reflection of the results on the teleprompter before the vote took place had nothing to do with that decision. Surely.

?Tie goes to the prompter,? Stewart said. ?On the positive side, we finally have found the evidence of Democratic voter fraud that the Republicans are always complaining about.?

On the other hand, Colbert noted that, ?Party platforms always mention the Lord. For Pete?s sake, the Republican platform is just a picture of Jesus with a thought bubble that says ?Get ?Er Done.?

And the ?Colbert Report? host warned, ?Folks, he?s very sensitive. Read your Bible, he?s got a hair trigger. And of course the Democrats cannot hide what they?ve done from God, because he googles himself constantly.?

Clinton gets props

Jay Leno was more focused on Clinton, raving about his prime-time sales pitch for President Obama.

?Both conventions are probably over and if you watched, I think it?s clear who should be the next President of the United States -- Bill Clinton,? Leno said.

?Bill Clinton spent 50 minutes praising Barack Obama?s accomplishments as president. Imagine how long he would have talked if they actually liked each other,? the ?Tonight Show? host added.

He also took some jabs at Republican nominee Mitt Romney?s taxes, commenting on the report that hackers claimed to have Romney?s tax records and threatened to release them unless they were paid off. ?This is such an unethical money-making scheme that Mitt Romney said he was quite impressed -- ?I could use these guys at Bain Capital. See if they?re available.??

?Letter to Santa Claus?

Stewart also got serious later in ?The Daily Show,? interviewing Austan Goolsbee. The University of Chicago professor and former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors for Barack Obama had strong feelings on the ?are you better off now than you were four years ago?? question.

?That was about the worst 4-5 months in the economic history of the United States,? Goolsbee said. ?The thought that people would like to go back to then when we were losing 800,000 jobs a month is a joke.?

Goolsbee also noted that contrary to what they advertised, the Republican economic plan is vague to the point of irrelevance. ?They keep saying it?s a specific plan. It?s not specific at all. The specifics are like ?Make America better,? Goolsbee said.

?It reads like a letter to Santa Claus,? Stewart agreed.

Statue Of Liberty Facts

You can't go to New York City without visiting some of the major attractions: Times Square, Rockefeller Center, or the theaters on Broadway. And, of course, there's the Statue of Liberty, the gigantic copper monument that has stood on Liberty Island and welcomed newcomers to America. But did you know these facts?

The Statue of Liberty has been a symbol of strength and resilience ever since its dedication in 1886. Given as a gift to New York's citizens, the statue was constructed in France and shipped over in pieces to be assembled on Liberty Island. But in the 1980s, engineers realized that Lady Liberty was barely hanging on by a thread. Her right arm hadn't been properly attached to the body, and several decades of wind and weather had eroded those already weak joints. The head of the statue was also about two feet off center from where it should have been, and there were several holes worn in the hollow copper.

The statue closed in 1984 for renovation, and was obscured from view using special scaffolding. Workers removed the original puddled iron bars holding Liberty's arm on, replacing them with corrosion-resistant stainless steel. The copper in Liberty's skin had to be replaced in certain sections; the commission used the copper from a Bell Labs rooftop, as it was similar in age and structure. Workers also installed an updated elevator and handicapped access to the crown and pedestal. If you want to go up into the crown, better look into it now; tickets must be reserved in advance, sometimes by up to a year.

Seeing as the statue is such a powerful and immediate symbol of personal freedom and the American dream, filmmakers have taken great pleasure in destroying Lady Liberty in disaster films. The first recorded instance of this was all the way back in the 1933 film Deluge, in which it was surrounded by a tsunami wave. The Statue was famously used in The Planet of the Apes to signal that the protagonist had been on a post-apocalyptic Earth all along.

The alien attack in Independence Day sends the statue toppling into the river, and is buried in water and/or ice in The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. The famous poster for 1981's Escape from New York shows the statue's decapitated head rolling through the city streets. While the actual film left Liberty intact, 1998's Deep Impact and 2008's Cloverfield both gleefully sent the crowned head careening through the avenues of Manhattan. And in Ghostbusters 2, the great lady actually comes to life and helps the boys save New York City!

Hundreds of Afghan soldiers detained, sacked for insurgent links

KABUL (Reuters) - The Afghan army has detained or sacked hundreds of soldiers for having links to insurgents, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday as it tries to stem the rising number of so-called insider attacks.

It made the announcement as NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to express his concern over the attacks, in which Afghan servicemen have killed at least 45 NATO-led troops this year, including 15 in August, compared with 35 for all of last year.

"Hundreds were sacked or detained after showing links with insurgents. In some cases we had evidence against them, in others we were simply suspicious," Defence Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi told reporters in Kabul.

"Using an army uniform against foreign forces is a serious point of concern not only for the Defence Ministry but for the whole Afghan government," Azimi said, adding that Karzai had ordered Afghan forces to devise ways to stop insider attacks.

Azimi declined to say whether the detained and fired soldiers were from Taliban strongholds in the south and east, saying they were from all over the country.

He said his ministry started an investigation into the attacks, called green-on-blue attacks, within the 195,000-strong Afghan army six months ago.

In his call to Karzai, Rasmussen outlined measures taken by NATO-led forces to stop the insider attacks and he urged Karzai to join the efforts, according to a NATO spokeswoman.

The measures include strengthening vetting procedures, better counter-intelligence and giving troops cultural awareness training.

NO LACK OF COMMITMENT

The commander of foreign troops in Afghanistan, U.S. General John Allen, said his troops were constantly taking new measures to counter the threat from rogue Afghan soldiers, which have been trained and armed by U.S. and other foreign forces.

Allen said he detected "no absence of commitment" by the Afghan government to counter rogue attacks.

"I believe the Afghan government is committed to doing this, again remembering it's a government that is still building its capacity," he told reporters during a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels where he briefed ambassadors on the Afghan campaign and on the rogue attacks.

Field commanders in Afghanistan have been given discretion to post more "guardian angel" sentries, who oversee foreign soldiers in crowded areas such as gyms and food halls, to respond to any rogue shootings, officials say.

"We will seek to create ... the opportunity for us if we see something going wrong, in terms of an insider beginning to reveal himself, that we are postured ... to be able to take immediate action as necessary to defend the force," Allen said.

He denied rogue attacks had shattered trust between Afghan and foreign forces but hinted at deep-seated problems.

"It's not at a tactical level that I fear for the relationship, it is at a higher level," he said, without elaborating.

In an interview with Reuters this week, Rasmussen dismissed any suggestion that the attacks would lead to more members of the NATO-led force pulling out early from an increasingly unpopular and costly war that has dragged on with few obvious signs of success since the Taliban were ousted in 2001.

But tension is simmering. The killing of three Australian troops by an Afghan army sergeant in the south last week prompted a deadly raid to find the rogue soldier and led to a war of words between Canberra and Kabul.

U.S. forces said on Sunday they had suspended training new recruits to the 16,000-strong Afghan local police, a militia separate from the Afghan national police, following the spike in insider attacks.

Amazon expected to unveil new Kindle Fire

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) ? Amazon.com is expected to update its Kindle Fire tablet computer on Thursday.

It will be an effort to take a larger share of a tablet computer market dominated by Apple's iPad. It could help Amazon.com Inc. boost sales of digital goods such as e-books and movies.

The announcement at a former airplane hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., will feature CEO Jeff Bezos. He announced the first Kindle Fire in New York less than a year ago. The price tag was $199, about half the price of the cheapest iPad now available.

Amazon has pursued the strategy of selling lower-priced tablets at razor-thin, if any, profit margins in order to boost sales of digital items from its online store. The Kindle Fire has a smaller screen than the iPad.

Isaac leaves Gulf beaches littered with oil tar

Weathered oil in the form of tar has washed up on some Louisiana beaches from Gulf waters churned by Hurricane Isaac, prompting restrictions of fishing in some waters and tests to determine whether the source is submerged oil from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

"I'd say there's a smoking gun," said Garret Graves, Gov. Bobby Jindal's top adviser on coastal issues. He said tests were being done to verify the source of the oil.

"It's an area that experienced heavy oiling during the oil spill," he said.

Officials Tuesday evening restricted fishing in waters extending a mile off a roughly 13-mile stretch of coastline from Port Fourchon eastward to just west of Caminada Pass.

Recreational rod and reel fishing can continue but commercial and recreational shrimping, crabbing and commercial fin fishing was prohibited there.

The state Wildlife and Fisheries Department said there was a large mat of tar on one beach and concentrations of tar balls on adjacent beaches. Graves said later surveys found several more mats. The size of the tar mats was not immediately clear. Graves said high water has prevented a thorough examination.

"With many of the southern parishes of Louisiana still inundated with flood waters and not accessible at this time, it is premature to make any claims about possible oiling there ? whether it is from the Deepwater Horizon accident or any other source," BP PLC said in a statement emailed late Tuesday.

It said BP was awaiting test results from an area west of Grand Isle.

Justice Department alleges gross negligence by BP in Gulf oil spill

"As state officials have made clear, it is important to fingerprint the residual oil to determine its origin. If any of it is connected to the Deepwater Horizon accident, BP stands ready to remove it under the direction of the Coast Guard's federal on-scene coordinator," the statement added.

"In Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, shoreline quick assessments were initiated on Saturday, Sept. 1 and there have been no indication thus far of Deepwater Horizon residual oil in areas outside of existing cleanup operations. Despite these early indications, we will wait to draw firm conclusions until full surveys have been completed."

Earlier Tuesday, Coast Guard Capt. Peter Gautier said the Coast Guard is investigating about 90 pollution cases in the wake of Hurricane Isaac.

They include six minor leaks and oil sheens from sources such as tank batteries and wellheads. Such leaks are expected after hurricanes, he said.

Gautier said oil found on about eight birds at Myrtle Grove came from storage tanks at a closed terminal.

In Braithwaite, chemicals leaked into water and air from tanks at a storage facility, but all are under control, he said.

Gautier said some railroad tank cars containing hazardous chemicals overturned during the storm but are secure. Isaac also grounded three deep-draft ships, he says, but the vessels are not leaking.

Simple Port Forward

Admittedly, I don't comprehend the need for third-party port forwarding utilities. Port forwarding and port triggering are standard features in most consumer and business routers. A possible use case scenario is the need to port forward on a router you don't have access to (in testing, I discovered that you do need to be able to log in with Simple Port Forwarding). In some cases, a router's management interface may make port forwarding tricky to setup and a third-party device many be easier for users to work with. Simple Port Forwarding is a free utility for Windows designed to help you set up port forwarding on a router. Besides a sharp, modern UI and tons of help in explaining how to port forward, as a utility, I found Simple Port Forwarding unnecessary to use for port forwarding in my router.

Availability and Download
Simple Port Forwarding comes in two varities: Ffree, and a $12.95 Pro edition. Both versions provide some extra functionality besides port forwarding, such as remote port forwarding from a browser, built-in port forwarding tester, access to guides and screenshots of port forwarding on the major routers out there, and more.

The free version is a quick download and install. As soon as you launch the program it updates a database of routers and applications that require port forwarding rules to work. This database is used to populate a drop-down menu from which you select your router and the application you are trying to port traffic to so you don't have to do any manually entry. However, adding an application from the drop-down list is only available in the paid version?in the free version I tested you still have to manually create a port forwarding rule. As far as detecting the router, Simple Port Forwarding automatically picked up and displayed my Netgear N600 WNDR3700 and its IP address.

Upon launch, the Simple Port Forwarding app opens a checklist users can follow to automate the port forwarding process. The features in the checklist, such as adding a rule from the drop-down menu are only available, again in the paid version. In the free version, there's another console for adding port forwarding manually, writing the rule to the router, and accessing other tools such as ping and a port forwarding test utility.

The UI is slick . You can even click a button "Show your router" which will display an actual image of your router make and model (as long as it's in Simple Port Forwarding's database). It's a sharp-looking interface that is more attractive and intuitive than many router interfaces, so I can see why a user may want to manage port forwarding through Simple Port Forwarding than many router management consoles.

The Test
However, looks aren't everything. Through the app, I could not add a port forwarding rule to my router using the free version?which the website states is supported.? I attempted to add a custom rule to port forward FTP traffic. After specifying the start and end ports as well as the destination IP, I clicked a button in the UI to add the newly created port forwarding entry to the router. I received a message stating that the rule was already created each time I tried to update to the router. The message persisted although an FTP port forward setting was not defined on the router's interface and a router reboot did not help.

The Verdict
If you can't port forward with Simple Port Forwarding, a port forwarding utility, you must consider the app useless. Yet, besides the cool interface, there is one good use of the app?it provides lots of tutelage on port forwarding. The app even guides you to links with step-by-step instructions with images on how to port forward on almost every major router interface on the market.? If you want to find out more about port forwarding or how to port forward your particular router, Simple Port Forwarding's website is a great destination. I didn?t test the paid version, but I would hope that if such care is taken to the website and design, support for this product would be decent.

However, the purpose of the software is to port forward your router, and the free version of app just did not work for me. Since the interface is well done, there are some tools to help you troubleshoot connections, and there's an abundance of help on port forwarding?all in the free version, Simple Port Forward gets 2.5 stars not so much for functionality but for its feature set.
