Iranian lawmaker: Obama proposed talks; US denies

(AP) ? An Iranian lawmaker claimed Wednesday that President Barack Obama called for direct talks with Iran in a secret letter to the Islamic Republic's supreme leader that also warned Tehran against closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

White House officials denied there was such a letter.

Iran has threatened to close the waterway, the route for about one-sixth of the global oil flow, because of new U.S. sanctions over its nuclear program.

Conservative lawmaker Ali Motahari revealed the content of the letter days after the Obama administration said it was warning Iran through public and private channels against any action that threatens the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf.

"In the letter, Obama called for direct talks with Iran," the semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Motahari as saying Wednesday. "The letter also said that closing the Strait of Hormuz is (Washington's) red line."

"The first part of the letter contains threats and the second part contains an offer for dialogue," he added.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast confirmed that Tehran received the letter and was considering a possible response.

In Washington, a White House official denied that Obama sent a letter to Khamanei. He said and communication of U.S. views were being delivered through other diplomatic messages. Her would give no further details. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor pointed to earlier comments from the Obama administration that noted the U.S. had a number of ways to communicate its views to the Iranian government. He said the U.S. remained committed to engaging with Tehran and finding a diplomatic solution to its larger issues with Iran's nuclear program.

Spokesmen have been vague on what the United States would do about Iran's threat to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz, but military officials have been clear that the U.S. is readying for a possible naval clash.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard, the country's most powerful military force, says Tehran's leadership has decided to order the closure of the oil route if Iran's oil exports are blocked. A senior Guard officer said earlier this month that the decision has been made by Iran's top authorities.

Iranian politicians have made the threat in the past, but this was the strongest statement yet that a closure of the strait is official policy.

Iran's regular army recently held naval war games near the vital waterway that were described by hard-liners as part of preparations to close the strait if sanctions are imposed. The Guard is planning major naval military exercises next month in the same region.

The U.S. last month enacted new sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and its ability to sell petroleum abroad over Tehran's nuclear program. The U.S. has delayed implementing the sanctions for at least six months, worried about sending the price of oil higher at a time when the global economy is struggling.

Closing the strait would have immense world economic impact. Iran is OPEC's second largest oil producer, and oil exports account for 80 percent of Iran's foreign currency income. To Tehran, an oil embargo would be tantamount to a declaration of war that could provoke the Iranian leadership to block the Hormuz strait.

At issue is Iran's nuclear program. The U.S., Israel and others charge that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons. Their case was bolstered by a report from the International Atomic Energy late last year, citing evidence that Iran was employing methods and equipment used in making bombs.

Iran has consistently denied that, saying its nuclear program is peaceful, aimed at producing electric power and isotopes for cancer treatment.

Libya had undeclared chemical weapon stockpile (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? The organization that oversees a global ban on chemical weapons says a team of its inspectors has confirmed that former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi had an undeclared stockpile the weapons.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons says inspectors who visited Libya this week found sulfur mustard and artillery shells "which they determined are chemical munitions."

Libya's new rulers told the Hague-based organization about the previously unknown stockpile last year after toppling Gadhafi from power.

The organization said in a statement Friday the chemical weapons are stored at the Ruwagha depot in southeastern Libya together with chemical weapons that Gadhafi had declared to international authorities.

Wall Street slips on reports of euro-zone downgrades (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks dropped on Friday, snapping a four-day winning streak, after news reports that Standard & Poor's would downgrade credit ratings on several euro-zone countries.

The ratings agency was reportedly set to downgrade euro-zone countries, including France and Austria, but leave the ratings of Germany and the Netherlands unchanged. French Finance Minister Francois Baroin said the country has been notified of a one-notch cut.

After the market's close, S&P followed through with downgrades of France and Austria as well as seven other members of the 17-nation euro zone bloc.

"This is going to destabilize a lot of those funding packages because they are all based on the AAA rating, and now you are going to have AA+ for France and Austria, and maybe down two notches for Italy," said Alan Valdes, director of floor operations for DME Securities in New York.

Friday's slide came as investors' focus shifted back to the euro zone's debt crisis.

In recent days, the S&P 500 had reached five-month highs on the back of solid U.S. economic data. The tight relationship between U.S. stocks and the euro has broken down in recent weeks, a sign investors have placed less emphasis on the euro zone's woes.

The Friday selloff shows Europe's debt problems can still make U.S. investors skittish. However, it is notable that the major U.S. stock indexes finished well off the day's lows.

Banks led the decline, as the impending downgrades and lackluster earnings from JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) drove those shares lower. The S&P financial index (.GSPF) fell 0.8 percent, making it the worst performer of the 10 major S&P sectors.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) dropped 48.96 points, or 0.39 percent, to 12,422.06 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) lost 6.41 points, or 0.49 percent, to 1,289.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) fell 14.03 points, or 0.51 percent, to 2,710.67.

For the week, the Dow rose 0.5 percent, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.9 percent, and the Nasdaq gained 1.4 percent.

Investors will look to earnings next week for insight on how the euro zone's debt woes may affect profits. <.N/O>

"If you get a weak recession or deep recession in Europe, it is going to hurt our companies and bring our market right back down," Valdes said.

JPMorgan Chase slid 2.5 percent to $35.92 after the bank said fourth-quarter profit fell as the European debt crisis weighed on trading and corporate deal-making. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon expressed renewed concerns about the euro-zone debt crisis.

The KBW index of bank stocks (.BKX) slipped 0.4 percent, following a streak of gains. The index was still up more than 10 percent for the year.

Bank of America (BAC.N) shares fell 2.7 percent to $6.61. Goldman Sachs (GS.N) lost 2.2 percent to $98.96.

Volume was light with about 6.39 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, below the daily average of 6.68 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 1,941 to 1,036, while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers 1,666 to 804.

It's earnings versus Europe for stocks (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock investors will return to a tug of war between signs of domestic strength and overseas concerns next week as a batch of critical earnings reports look to add credence to the idea the economy is improving, while credit rating downgrades in Europe will keep that region's difficulties in view.

Bank stocks will probably once again be a primary focus, as not only will European issues call the group's profit outlook into question, but many key names report results.

Equities have recently undergone a decoupling with respect to Europe's sovereign debt crisis as signs of progress in the euro zone, along with improving U.S. data, have pushed Wall Street higher on improved growth prospects. Financials have been a beneficiary of that rising tide, with Bank of America up 22 percent since the start of the year.

So far this month, the S&P 500 (.SPX) is up 2.5 percent, while the Dow (.DJI) is up 1.7 percent and the Nasdaq is up 4.1 percent.

"We're going to see more volatility in the weeks ahead with tension between earnings and Europe," said Christopher Sheldon, the Boston-based director of investment strategy at BNY Mellon Wealth Management, which oversees $171 billion globally.

"We want to see Europe resolved, but there will continue to be ups and downs, and while earnings will continue to be relatively good, we do expect slowing compared with 2011."

However, the uncertainty about Europe returned in a big way on Friday after Standard & Poor's downgraded the ratings of several euro-zone countries, including Italy, after the market closed. Talk of the downgrades spurred a selloff that erased most of the gains for the week, when the S&P rose for four straight sessions.

A downgrade could exacerbate the area's difficulties and bring concerns about how they might affect U.S. banks profits back to the forefront.

Still, market participants looking for signs of strength don't have to look far. Data has been bullish lately, including Friday's consumer sentiment reading at an eight-month high that sharply exceeded what was anticipated.

"The prospect of a downgrade has been around for a while, so despite today's reaction, everyone was aware of the potential, and I don't think it will be as impactful, especially as corporate business trends remain strong," said Hank Herrmann, chief executive of Waddell & Reed Financial Inc in Overland Park, Kansas.

HINTS OF BETTER TIMES AHEAD

Earnings reports from numerous bellwethers could reinforce the growth story. Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), General Electric Co (GE.N), Intel Corp (INTC.O), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) are among the names set to report.

Early reads have supported the idea that better times lie ahead. JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) said the domestic economy was strengthening even as its profit fell 23 percent, while Alcoa Inc (AA.N) rallied earlier in the week after giving a bullish outlook for the aluminum sector.

"Banks will be an important part of the story, especially with Europe in the picture, and investors will also be looking at names like GE, which have global exposure, to see what insights can be gleaned from that," said Herrman, who helps oversee $90 billion in assets.

Next week, when markets will be closed on Monday because of the Martin Luther King holiday, will also see the release of the New York Fed's January manufacturing data, December readings on inflation from both the Producer Price Index and the Consumer Price Index, as well as December housing starts.

For the week, the Dow rose 0.5 percent while the S&P 500 gained 0.9 percent and the Nasdaq added 1.4 percent.

Romney leads Republicans, narrows gap with Obama: poll (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has sailed farther ahead of rival Republican candidates nationally and narrowed President Barack Obama's lead in the White House race, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Tuesday.

Thirty percent of Republicans in the poll would vote for Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, compared to 18 percent a month ago.

The poll suggests Romney has consolidated support among Republicans since winning the first nominating contest in Iowa by a slim margin last week.

He is expected to win New Hampshire's contest on Tuesday, propelling him forward in his quest to take on Obama in November.

Obama leads all of the Republican candidates in the poll, but Romney is gaining ground.

The survey showed Obama leading the Republican front-runner by 48 percent to 43 percent, compared to a 48 percent to 40 percent difference a month ago. The former governor bested Obama in a poll conducted in late October.

With both Obama and Romney strengthening their positions nationally, the competition between the two men is getting closer, Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson said.

"Now that Mitt Romney looks like he's got a clearer path to the Republican nomination, his standing is improved as well, so this race is tightening between Romney and Obama," he said.

Romney polled the strongest against the president. Obama beat former speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich 53 to 38 percent, Congressman Ron Paul by 48 to 41 percent, and former Senator Rick Santorum by 51 to 40 percent.

The president, who is benefitting from better economic data including improved jobs figures, maintained a steady approval rating of 47 percent, the same as last month.

RIVALS WAY BEHIND

Romney's closest Republican rival in the national poll was Gingrich, who had 20 percent support, down from 28 percent in December.

Gingrich lost momentum after a disappointing fourth place finish in Iowa, where he suffered from negative ads funded by a group associated with Romney.

Paul was next in the Republican race, coming in with 16 percent support. Santorum, who placed a close second in Iowa, was next with 13 percent, followed by Texas Governor Rick Perry, who came in at 7 percent.

The results in New Hampshire's contest will determine whether Romney can build on his momentum going forward.

Despite fierce attacks from his rivals, he is expected to win New Hampshire handily. If he does so, the margin of his victory will determine his strength going into the next state contests in South Carolina and Florida.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted January 5-9. It mostly took place before the toughest days of Romney's campaign in New Hampshire, where he had to fend off attacks on Monday about his record as a businessman and venture capitalist.

The poll was conducted by telephone with 1,046 adults and is considered accurate within 3 percentage points.

Dog beats out Kardashian for Skechers Super Bowl ad

By Marisa Taylor

Reality television star Kim Kardashian has taken a lot of flak for her 72-day marriage to New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries.

But she probably never dreamed that she?d be bested by a dog.

In what is perhaps the ultimate humiliation, Kardashian has been swapped out for a French bulldog in a commercial for Skechers GORun shoes that will air during this year?s Super Bowl, USA Today reports.

The reality star appeared in a steamy commercial for Skechers Shape-Up shoes during last year?s Super Bowl, but the Skechers commercial airing during this year?s game will instead feature a dog. In the spot, the dog will wear Sketchers GORun shoes and will race against a pack of greyhounds at Tucson Greyhound Park, according to the newspaper.

(Said steamy ad is below. Post continues below steamy ad.)

But Skechers insists that the absence of Kardashian in the company?s new Super Bowl commercial is not due to backlash against the reality star over her hugely hyped wedding and quickie divorce. Leonard Armato, president of Skechers Fitness, told USA Today that "Kim got us more attention than we ever dreamed. We have to establish Skechers as more than a lifestyle company."

Armato told USA Today that while Kardashian?s contract with Sketchers expired at the end of 2011, she had a big influence on the brand?s popularity, and attributes much of the 400 percent increase in fans on the Skechers Facebook page after the Super Bowl to her star power.

Sketchers on Tuesday also announced that Mark Cuban, owner of both Landmark Theaters and the Dallas Mavericks, would make a cameo in the Skechers Super Bowl spot as GORun?s new spokesman.

Cuban told USA Today that while he?s no Kim Kardashian, ?one of the things I do know is high technology and how to use it.?

UPDATE 3-Chinese group takes over Italian yacht maker Ferretti

Tue Jan 10, 2012 9:34am EST

* Shandong Heavy to take 75 pct stake in Ferretti

* RBS, Strategic Value to take 12.5 pct stake each

* Shandong eyes HK listing for Ferretti in 3-5 years

* Chinese groups picking up distressed European assets

By Alison Leung

JINAN, China, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Machinery maker Shandong Heavy Industry Group has sealed a deal to take a 75 percent stake in debt-laden Italian luxury yacht maker Ferretti, the latest in a series of Chinese acquisitions of European brands.

Chinese companies, acquiring top brands as a shortcut to global success, have been taking advantage of Europe's financial woes by picking up assets on the cheap.

Tuesday's deal, the first Chinese takeover of a top Italian yachtmaker, also reflected the growing demand for luxury in mainland China, where new marinas sprinkle the Southern coast.

"The deal would help Ferretti better tap the 7 billion euro global yacht industry and meet growing Chinese demand for luxury goods for the coming five to 10 years," Ferretti Group Chairman Norberto Ferretti said in a statement.

"China is one of the most rapidly developing countries for the yachting sector and has great potential," the companies said in a joint statement released at a signing ceremony in the eastern Chinese city of Jinan.

Ferretti's key management team, headquarters and production bases will remain in Italy, the companies said. Shandong Heavy said it plans to build yachts in China for the domestic market.

"China offers an opportunity to our companies, especially when our economy is not going well," Anton Francesco Albertoni, head of Italian industry body UCINA, told Reuters.

Italy has long dominated the yachting industry, which contributes 3.36 billion euros to the country's economy.

"Chinese are learning fast and well. They love their marinas and golf clubs," Albertoni said.

Shandong Heavy will seek a separate listing for Ferretti in Hong Kong in three to five years, Chairman Tan Xuguang said.

NEW CREDIT FACILITY

Under the deal, Ferretti's roughly 580 million euros existing loans will be reduced to 116 million euros. In addition, Ferretti will receive a new 80 million euro revolving credit facility, said John Davison, global head of strategic investment at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, one of Ferretti's main creditors.

Shandong Heavy will make an 178 million euro equity investment for its 75 percent stake in the business. There will also be a 100 million euro capital increase, Ferretti said.

Lenders will receive the remaining 25 percent stake in Ferretti through another 25 million euro equity injection, with Royal Bank of Scotland and Strategic Value Partners receiving a 12.5 percent stake each.

Founded in 1968, Ferretti was saddled with 1.2 billion euros of debt in 2007 after the company's leveraged buyout by Candover Partners. The company defaulted on its debt in January 2009 during the economic downturn.

Ferretti's lenders agreed in April 2009 to write down the debt to 560 million euros in return for a 53 percent stake from Candover, which lost its investment in the firm.

OVERSEAS BUYS

Shandong Heavy, which makes construction machinery, power systems, commercial vehicles and auto parts, is the ultimate parent of Hong Kong and Shenzhen-listed diesel engine maker Weichai Power Co Ltd . Shandong Heavy had operating income of 107.6 billion yuan in 2010.

The trend of Chinese companies' overseas acquisitions is also evidenced by automaker Geely's acquisition of Ford Motor Co's Volvo car unit in 2010 -- and traceable back to 2004 when Lenovo Group Ltd bought the personal computer business of International Business Machines Corp.

The deal followed last month's $3.5 billion buy of the Portuguese government's stake in utility EDP SA by China Three Gorges Corp.

Bank of China Ltd was among the lenders eyeing parts of RBS, as the process began to trim the investment banking arm of the government-owned British bank, sources told Reuters last week.

Ferretti, which owns the Pershing, Riva and Ferretti Yachts brands, ranked the first in the 2011 Global Order Book, the benchmark annual report on the nautical industry by magazine ShowBoat International.

The 2008 crisis hit the sector hard, prompting firms to seek partners in cash-rich emerging countries, a trend likely to continue as the euro debt crisis shows no signs of abating.

A growing number of shipyards has been built in China, where yacht imports increased threefold from 2009 to 2010.

"The opening of new marinas, yachting facilities and yachting events in China, especially on the Southern Coast, is actually fuelling demand for yachts," said Olivier Burlot, managing director of Hong Kong-based international yacht brokerage Simpson Marine.

Citigroup, Holihan Lockey and ICBC International acted as joint financial advisors to SHIG-Weichai Group, while Bonelli Erede Pappalardo and Akerman Senterfitt were legal advisers.

Rothschild and Ernst & Young acted as financial advisers to RBS and Strategic Value Partners.

Claim of bias in university classrooms flares anew

? Student Republicans at San Diego State University have rekindled an issue that arises periodically at campuses around the country by accusing some professors of injecting personal agendas into their teaching.

The SDSU College Republicans club has released a ?Teach or Preach? list calling out some faculty members they say are biased and identifying others who they contend are not.

Faculty members and a top campus administrator did not seem terribly troubled by the list and supported the students? right to express their opinions,

?There are a lot of professors here who take a class period, or the whole course, to spread their political agenda,? said Lx ?Fangonilo, ?president of the club.

He cited as an example a class he took that was supposed to be a survey of history from the 18th century to the present.

?But it was all about how corporations have taken over the world,? Fangonilo said. ?That?s class time we are paying for. For us not to get the class we signed up for, that?s not right.?

Nancy Marlin, the university?s provost, said: ?Any bias or slanting is, of course, relative to one?s own position ? We actually encourage open discussion of controversial material. This is something we think is critical; that?s how you do the exploration of new ideas. That?s why we have academic freedom and freedom of speech. Students are free to express themselves. We encourage it. All of this is part of being a vibrant university ?

Marlin said the university has a formal process for students to complain if they feel class content is ?irrelevant and unrelated to the subject.? Such cases, which she said are rare, are heard by a committee composed of students and faculty members.

Andrew Mytelka, news editor for The Chronicle of Higher Education, said charges of bias in higher education are not uncommon.

?Yes, you hear about this on a fairly frequent basis, but it?s always so anecdotal. I don?t know anyone who tallies it,? Mytelka said. ?These accusations usually come from students on the right, but occasionally on the left. They are usually so subjective and not really provable it?s hard to judge the veracity. You rarely hear about any follow through unless you have a real extreme event with a professor who has a real problem.?

The Republican club has circulated the list to approximately 700 people ? mostly students ? on its email list, Fangonilo said, as well as to the general faculty via email.

?And we?ve posted it all over Facebook and everyone?s reposting it,? he said.

Carl Barnes, vice president of the club, said it is not a coincidence that the list was released this week as registration for the new semester began.

?We want to put it out as a guide to students,? he said. ?We want them to know a thing or two about the classes they are taking. Why not take one where you are actually getting the subject you sign up for? We plan to do this every semester and our goal is to kind of inspire the other (Republican) clubs on campuses around the state to do the same.?

Jason Derulo was forced to cancel his upcoming tour on Thursday after fracturing his neck during rehearsals. According to the singer, he was trying to pull off an acrobatic move when he missed the landing and fell on his neck, causing an acute fracture of his vertebra.

Derulo, 22, addressed his fans about the accident on Twitter, posting a picture showing him in a neck brace and hospital gown and explaining, "I fractured my neck doing tumbling & acrobatics 4 tour! Always tryin 2 push boundaries 4 YOU! Like my new chain? ;)."

The singer's label also issued a statement from Derulo about the incident, which read, "To all my fans who planned to come to the 'Future History' world tour, the pain of letting you down cuts me way deeper than this injury I've sustained. My fans mean everything to me, so I'm praying for a speedy recovery in order to perform for you in the near future."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, as Derulo was being rushed to Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines, Florida, he was told by doctors that he narrowly avoided being paralyzed in the incident. He's since been released from the hospital, but has been ordered to wear the neck brace for several months.

, which was released in September, was slated to kick off in Glasgow on February 23.

The singer recently rocked the stage for MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012" celebration when he performed a high-energy set
of his hits "It Girl" and "Don't Wanna Go Home."

Wii-controlled robot pets cat in YouTube video; Internet's head ...

And now for something completely different: Here?s a video of a robot brushing a cat.

The bot, a Nao model hacked by clever software developer Taylor Veltrop, is controlled with a Nintendo Wiimote, a Microsoft Kinect, a head-mounted display and a treadmill. The setup is perfect for that special someone in your life who loves animals but is constantly stymied by crippling pet dander allergies.

Veltrop?s video shows three views: his, the view from the Kinect and the view of a third party watching the cat/bot exchange.

We?ve had a Nao bot in our offices before, and these guys are adorable and quite hackable, too.

In the recent past, Veltrop has hacked his non-Nao ?Veltrobot? + Kinect setup to do pushups and wield a knife.

Nao robots were designed by Aldebaran Robotics, a French company. Each Nao unit costs around $15,000 and is just shy of two feet tall at 57 centimeters. The bots walk upright and have toddler-like ranges of motion. But being outfitted with an array of sensors, the Nao-bot can navigate a room, track objects and respond to people and faces.

The Nao robots can be loaded with applications, programmed to send status updates or hacked to do any number of tricks, such as pet-brushing.

WebView for Weight Watchers Android App

If you are trying to lose weight and have both an Android based smartphone and are signed up on the Weight Watchers website, learning about the WebView for Weight Watchers app for Android will be of interest to you.

Available in the Android Market for $1.30, WebView for Weight Watchers was developed by the folks at somethingJava and are not associated with the Weight Watchers affiliation.

So, what does this app do and why should you spend $1.30 on it?

A Portal App

A portal app is one that brings you to a specific location with a single click. With the WebView for Weight Watchers app, that specific location is the Weight Watchers mobile site. Most Weight Watchers members are fully aware of their website but either do not know about or do not have access to their mobile site. With WebView installed on your Android phone, now you do.

It is important to understand that a "portal" app does not function as a standard app, in that it does not do anything else besides bring you to a website. So you may be wondering why would you pay for an app that only brings you to a website that you can access through the browser on your Android phone?

One Click Access

To navigate to the mobile site for Weight Watchers using your phone's browser, there are a few steps you need take every time you want to visit the site:

 1. Find out what the site's URL or address is. (Okay, so you will only have to do this the first time you visit the site.)
 2. Open your browser application.
 3. Enter in the web address or open your favorites and select the Weight Watchers mobile site.
 4. Press "Go" to be brought to the site.
 5. Sign in using your credentials.

Or, you could use WebView, save it to any of your desktop screens, and get to the Weight Watchers mobile set using these steps:

 1. Launch the WebView for Weight Watchers app from your desktop

That's it. Once you launch the app, you are taken directly to the Weight Watchers mobile site where you can log in, enter in or search for information, find out how many points that deep dish apple pie will cost you and have full access to the entire mobile site.

WebView for Weight Watchers is a convenience app, saving you time and energy. I've found that if I have to complete a bunch of steps to get to a site, I may lose interest after a few times. And when it comes to something like dieting, that already is not what I would call "a fun thing to do," any added stress, like having to complete the 4 or 5 steps listed above, will give me reason to just go ahead and eat that deep dish apple pie.

Your mobile diet partner and scheduled improvements

Let's face it, losing weight can be tough. Any additional motivation or help that dieters can get can only serve to help them stay the course and hit their weight loss goals. For US members of Weight Watchers, having a portal app like WebView on their Android phone gives them a mobile partner to help them make health choices.

This app will not speak to you, remind you of your goals, track your steps and calories burned or shock you when it senses that you're thinking of eating a double cheeseburger. It is not a feature rich app that will captivate you with its wonderful design. What it will do is give you easy and direct access to the Weight Watchers mobile site and may just help you keep focused on your health goals.

somethingJava, the app developer, has posted a few planned upgrades that they are working on for a future release. One is a built-in bar code scanner that can be used to scan products and then deliver the results back to you in the form of how many points a serving of that scanned product will cost you. The second future improvement will be a "Talk Center," where users can post their success stories, get or give assistance to fellow dieters and even post your favorite recipes.?Weight Watchers is all about creating a family or "community of dieters" atmosphere, making this future upgrade quite appropriate.

Summary

WebView's rating screen

Don't assume that low ratings are a bad sign. Read their reasons as judge their appropriateness.

Thomas Phelps

As a reviewer of Android apps, I am always interested in apps that receive mostly 5 Star reviews. WebView for Weight Watchers is one such app. Since the developers make it clear that WebView is a portal app, I have to disregard the 1 Star ratings from people who complain that all the app does is take them to the Weight Watchers site. They're right in that that is all this app does. It takes you, with a single click, to the Weight Watchers mobile site. Nothing more and nothing less.

The app only works for US based Weight Watchers members due to the Weight Watchers mobile site being only set up for US members.?

So, is this app worth the $1.30? Since I am not a Weight Watchers member (not because I don't need to be, mind you!) I certainly wouldn't spend the money on this app. But for those who are Weight Watchers members and would like the single-click access to the mobile site, it may certainly be worth the modest investment.

Overall, I give this app 4 1/2 stars but will keep an eye open when the developers deliver the updates promised.

Always consult your health care provider before beginning any diet or exercise program.

Senegal music star Ndour makes bid for presidency

(AP) ? World music icon Youssou Ndour says he plans to run in Senegal's presidential election next month, challenging an 85-year-old incumbent whose plans to seek a third term have sparked violent protests.

Ndour, who made the announcement late Monday on his private radio and TV stations, joins some 20 other candidates already running against President Abdoulaye Wade.

While the Grammy-winning artist sells out concert venues worldwide and is the West African country's most famous cultural export, his prospects with Senegalese voters remain unclear.

The election less than two months away, and the incumbent president has been in power for more than a decade.

"For a very long time, many Senegalese of different backgrounds have called for my candidacy for the presidency next February," Ndour said. "I've listened, I've heard and I am responding favorably to their request. I am a candidate. It's a supreme patriotic duty, the best I can give of myself. I am the alternative to the current leadership in place in the country."

Ndour, 52, is well known in Senegal for his scathing critique of the country's ruling party. He already owns a hugely popular private radio station that holds regular debates featuring government critics.

And he has a newspaper that routinely highlights corruption allegations involving the country's ruling elite, including the president's family.

Wade's plans to run, as well as frequent power cuts and the spiraling cost of living, sparked violent protests last year in what has historically been one of West Africa's most stable democracies.

Once a symbol of the opposition, Wade became president in a landmark election hailed for being one of the first peaceful transfers of power on the continent.

He set off a wave of criticism though when he announced he planned to run for a third term, using a loophole in the electoral law to circumvent the two-term maximum set out in the constitution.

And massive street protests hit Senegal's capital last year following a proposed constitutional change that would have paved the way for Wade's son to succeed him. Wade later agreed to cancel it, but the unrest marked the biggest challenge to his 11-year rule.

Michael Finley eyes return to NBA

Michael Finley would like the NBA to know that he?s ready to make a return to the league. Finley, 38, last played during the Boston Celtics? run to the NBA Finals in 2009-10, when they lost in seven games to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Finley sent a message to Hoopshype?s Twitter account, wondering why the basketball site did not list him among available free agents.

?U left me off the free agency list #notdoneyet,? Finley wrote.

In a conversation with Hoopshype late last week, Finley said the ankle injury that hampered him in his season with the Celtics is almost fully healed.

?When I went to Boston, my ankle wasn?t 100 percent,? Finley told the site. ?So after that season, I got my ankle worked on. I?ve been working hard to get that at 100 percent. I feel a lot better than during my time in Boston.

?With the lockout and the shortened season, I wouldn?t be surprised if there?s more injuries than usual since there?s been not much of a training camp. I?m just working hard to be in shape and prepared in case an NBA team calls me.?

But Finley, who played in the NBA for 15 seasons, the bulk of which in Dallas and San Antonio, said he?s willing to play overseas or even in the D-League.

?I got offers from the D-League before (Ricky Davis or Greg Ostertag) ever thought about playing in the D-League,? Finley said. ?My thing is, I want to play basketball, I would enjoy playing in the D-League, but at the same time I don?t want to take an opportunity away from a young guy to get exposure. I?m still thinking about it. If the right situation comes, where I could be something like a player-coach, maybe I would take that opportunity.?

Japan police turned away Aum Shinrikyo cult member

National broadcaster NHK also reported that Hirata phoned a special police hotline to ask how he might surrender but the call was again not taken seriously.

Hirata has been wanted for his alleged involvement in the abduction in 1995 of an official of a Tokyo public notary looking into the cult's activities. Kiyoshi Kariya was taken to the cult's compound in the foothills of Mount Fuji where he was given a home-made truth serum. After apparently dying of an overdose, Kariya's body was incinerated in the cult's compound.

Taro Takimoto, a lawyer who met with Hirata on Monday, said Hirata has admitted being the driver of the car used in the abduction. He added that Hirata denied any involvement in the attempt to assassinate Takaji Kunimatsu, the head of the National Police Agency, as the police investigated the sarin gas attacks.

Hirata ? who had been an accomplished shooter before he joined Aum Shinrikyo ? has also pointed out to police that the statute of limitations in that case has already expired.

Hirata told Takimoto, who himself survived an attack by Aum members for his efforts to win the release of those who wanted to leave the cult, that he wanted closure after so many years on the run.

He was carrying a backpack with tens of thousands of yen but has refused to reveal to authorities who sheltered or assisted him during his time on the run.

He is also refusing to comment on two other fugitives wanted in connection with the cult's reign of terror. New photos of Naoko Kikuchi, who would be 40 today, and Katsuya Takahashi, 53, are being displayed in train stations and both are wanted in connection with the sarin gas attacks.

By Anna Chan

Yes, we know, it's a loooongwait until "Dancing With the Stars" returns for its 14th season on March 19. But in the meantime, the Game Show Network has a little present for fans: a photo of various celebs and pros who have participated in the flashy ballroom bash over the show's many seasons.

Season 13 champ J.R. Martinez, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Ralph Macchio, Mel B., Gilles Marini, Audrina Patridge, Derek Hough, Lacey Schwimmer and Chaz Bono all posed together for a GSN photo that the network said made " 'Dancing With the Stars' history."
