My church put on a financial boot camp this past weekend, the content of which largely followed Dave Ramsey?s baby steps, along with additional Biblical support for a debt-free generous lifestyle and some fun mathematical examples of the power of compound interest.? But one of the volunteers mentioned a principle that he and his wife live by: his savings rate does not exceed his giving rate.

I admit that I was surprised to hear this come out of a financial professional?s mouth, even speaking in the context of a ministry volunteer.? I had never heard or read this suggestion through years of absorbing personal finance media and several studies of what the Bible says about money.

?

However, it was something I had wondered about myself.? We tithe and give offerings, but the total percentage of our income that we give is about five points less than what we save for retirement.? Does this make us guilty of ?storing up for [our]selves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal? (Matthew 6:19)?

?

One reframing quote that I heard during the workshop that I appreciated was that ?giving? should be thought of as ?investing in the kingdom of God.?? In that sense, we are investing more in our earthly treasures than we are in God?s kingdom. ?Is the action of investing that extra 5% for our long-term future different in some way than spending it in the now, in terms of comparing it to our giving rate?

?

We don?t have any plans to greatly alter our long-term savings or giving rates, but this session definitely gave me something to think about in terms of a method of evaluating our priorities.

?

Filmmakers Hope Station Wagon Documentary Gains Traction ...

For Chris Zaluski and Sam Smartt, Masters of Fine Arts students at Wake Forest University, the station wagon is a lost piece of Americana.

The car that was so integral to traveling families from the 1950s-1970s has virtually disappeared in favor of minivans, SUVs and crossover vehicles. Together, the pair set out to find the remaining wagon owners and chronicle the rise and fall of the wagon.

The students filmed Wagonmasters, their 40-minute documentary film about the American station wagon automobile, which screened?Saturday to crowds at?the Inn at St. John's?in Plymouth during Concours d'Elegance festivities.

The pair hope the weekend exposure, as well as playing the film festival circuit and other auto events, can help build word-of-mouth interest in the film.

"This is cool because it's people who are naturally interested in your topic," Smartt said after an encore screening Saturday. "Hopefully it will be the first of many screenings we'll get to do at car shows."

The filmmakers said they feel fortunate that the first car show that invited them to screen their film was essentially the "Super Bowl of car shows."

Zaluski said these factors created a "perfect storm" indicating a wide appeal for the documentary film.

The pair hope to continue screening the film around the country before an eventual DVD release with some footage from the cutting room floor. The filmmakers said they captured about 80 hours of video while filming the documentary, of which just 40 minutes was used.

Woman injured in Colo. shooting suffers miscarriage

A woman who was critically wounded in the Colorado theater shooting that left dead her 6-year-old daughter has suffered a miscarriage.

The family of Ashley Moser said in a statement Saturday that she is recovering from surgery but that the trauma caused the miscarriage.

Moser suffered gunshot wounds to her neck and abdomen. A family member has said they hadn't told her about Veronica's death.

The family says funeral plans for the girl remain pending.

Former Indiana basketball player Neil Reed dies

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (AP) ? Neil Reed, the former Indiana basketball player who coach Bob Knight was caught on tape choking in 1997, has died after collapsing in his Central California home. He was 36.

Pioneer Valley High School Principal Shanda Herrera said Reed died Thursday morning of heart complications in Nipomo, Calif.

In March 2000, Reed accused Knight of choking him during a practice in 1997.

When video of the practice surfaced backing Reed's claim, the Hall of Fame coach, who was known for his temper as well as his success, was put on a zero-tolerance policy by then-Indiana University President Dr. Myles Brand.

That September, Knight, who became head coach at Indiana in 1971 and won three national championships, was fired after a student accused him of grabbing his arm.

"Believe it or not, I'm not happy that Indiana fired Coach Knight," Reed told ESPN The Magazine at the time. "I don't have any feelings about it, mostly because I've had to stand alone for so long. In a way, I've been proven right, but that doesn't make my life any easier."

Reed transferred to Southern Mississippi shortly after the incident at Indiana and played there in the 1998-99 season. He told the magazine he "fell out of love" with basketball.

"Maybe that was Coach Knight's fault and maybe it was partly my fault," he said. "But if I can handle what I've been through, then I know I can handle what lies ahead."

His coach at Southern Miss, James Green, called Reed a "winner" Thursday night.

"He did the things that it takes to win ball games," said Green, now the coach at Jacksonville State in Alabama. "He was good to coach. You knew he was going to go out and give his best."

Green worked with Reed's father, Terry, at Southern Miss and Iowa State.

"When something like that happens, it's like part of your family," Green said. "It's kind of like when you have children, you never expect them to be passing before you."

Herrera said Reed had worked at the Santa Maria school coaching football, basketball, golf and teaching physical education since 2007.

"The shock of the passing of Neil Reed and the sadness we feel for his wife, two daughters and entire family is overwhelming," Indiana coach Tom Crean posted on his Twitter account Thursday. "Tragic news."

Reed is survived by his wife, Kelly, and two daughters.

The measure is prompted by Mr. Romney's "stunning lack of transparency," he said in a statement.

Will he propose extending that standard to members of Congress?

?I?m looking at that,? he said in a C-Span interview to be broadcast on Sunday.

Romney has released his 2010 return and promises to release the 2011 return, but he has rebuffed calls to release returns from further back. "None of the tax returns are required by law to be put out," he told Fox News. ?What is required by law ? the financial disclosure ? has already been made." President Obama has released tax returns from 2000-2011 and posted them on his campaign website.

It wouldn't be the first time that Congress held the president and members of the executive branch to a higher standard than it holds itself. When Congress passed ethics legislation in 1978 to correct abuses of the Watergate era, lawmakers exempted themselves from key provisions, including "revolving-door" restrictions on lobbying former colleagues.

Congress also exempted itself from the 1966 Freedom of Information Act ? an exemption that extends even to commissions created by Congress, such as the so-called 9/11 commission.?

For a time, senators routinely submitted their tax returns in a sealed envelope delivered to the ethics committee, to be opened only if needed to inform an investigation. But the shift of financial records online ended even that practice.

Since its enactment more than 35 years ago, Public Law 94-142, now the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), has transformed educational opportunity for all children and youth with disabilities. However, the law does not adequately hold public agencies accountable for vital services and instruction such as braille, orientation and mobility, the provision of low vision devices, and a host of other essential services and instruction needed by students with vision loss to truly receive a free and appropriate public education worthy of their tremendous potential.

The Anne Sullivan Macy Act, comprehensive draft legislation endorsed by the American Council of the Blind (ACB), American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER), Council of Schools for the Blind (COSB), Perkins School for the Blind, and VisionServe Alliance, would revolutionize America's special education system for all students with vision loss, including students who may also have additional, and potentially even more significant, disabilities.

Everyone who cares about the scope and quality of special education for students with vision loss is invited to join in the national effort to work for the legislation's prompt enactment and/or incorporation into IDEA. While the process for congressional review and reauthorization of IDEA promises to be a long one, advocates should begin now to educate federal policy makers about the critical need for the array of improvements that the Anne Sullivan Macy Act embodies.

Named for Helen Keller?s beloved teacher, the Anne Sullivan Macy Act would strengthen the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and improve results for the more than 100,000 children and youth with vision loss, including those who also have additional disabilities. Key provisions of the legislation include:

? Ensure that every student with vision loss is properly identified regardless of formal disability category or classification so that all students with vision loss, including those with additional disabilities, are counted and properly served.

? Expand knowledge about the scope and quality of special education and related services provided to students with vision loss through refined data collection that tracks all students with vision loss, regardless of formal disability category or classification.

? Expect states to conduct strategic planning (and commit such planning to writing) to guarantee that all students with vision loss within each state receive all specialized instruction and services needed by students with vision loss provided by properly trained personnel.

? Clarify that proper evaluation of students with vision loss includes evaluation for students? needs for instruction in communication and productivity (including braille instruction, and assistive technology proficiency inclusive of low vision devices where appropriate); self-sufficiency and interaction (including orientation and mobility, self-determination, sensory efficiency, socialization, recreation and fitness, and independent living skills); and age appropriate career education. Such instruction and services constitute the Expanded Core Curriculum, the body of services which teachers of students with visual impairments and related professionals are expertly trained to provide.

? Ramp up U.S. Department of Education responsibilities to monitor and report on states? compliance with their obligations with respect to instruction and services specifically provided to students with vision loss.

? Assist parents and educators of students with vision loss through regular and up-to-date written policy guidance from the U.S. Department of Education.

? Establish a national collaborative organizational resource, the Anne Sullivan Macy Center on Vision Loss and Educational Excellence, to proliferate evidence-based practices in the education of students with vision loss, to keep special educators current with the latest instructional methods, and to supplement state and local educational agency provision of the instruction and services constituting the Expanded Core Curriculum.

USDA says drought will push up food prices in 2013

CNBC's Jane Wells reports on the Midwest drought's impact on food prices.

??MINNEAPOLIS --?The record drought gripping half the country will help push food prices up by 3 percent to 4 percent next year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.?

Milk, eggs, beef, poultry and pork prices will all be affected by the drought, which has pushed up prices for feed. Beef prices are expected to see the biggest jump at 4 percent to 5 percent. Dairy product prices are forecast to climb 3.5 percent to 4.5 percent; poultry and egg prices are projected to rise 3 percent to 4 percent; and pork prices are expected to rise 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent in 2013, the agency said.

"In 2013 as a result of this drought we are looking at above-normal food price inflation. ... Consumers are certainly going to feel it," USDA economist Richard Volpe said.

Normal grocery price inflation is about 2.8 percent, he added, so even at the low end of the projected range people will see their grocery expenses rise more than usual next year. The USDA kept its projected food price increase for 2012 steady at 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent.

The figures are the agency's first food price projections to factor in the drought, though farmers and others have been warning that prices will rise. The drought has sent corn, soybean and other commodity prices soaring in recent weeks as fields dry out and crops wither across much of the country's midsection.

Volpe said the drought is not expected to affect prices for fruits and vegetables. Most of those crops are irrigated. The USDA is projecting an overall 2 percent to 3 percent increase for all fruits and vegetables next year, the same as it expects this year.

USDA economists were aware of the drought a month ago when they did their last projections but didn't know how bad it would get, Volpe said.

"This drought was a surprise for everybody," Volpe said. "The USDA was forecasting a record year for the corn crop until this drought materialized. Now we're not going to get that."

Poultry prices will be the first to rise because of the drought because chickens and turkeys need only a few months to grow to market size, he said. Beef and pork take longer, and the agency actually revised its beef price projection for 2012 downward because producers are sending more cattle to the market at the moment as they reduce their herds in response to the drought, he said.

Meat and poultry prices are the most affected because feed prices represent the biggest part of their cost of production. Processed food prices are less affected by changes in commodity prices because ingredients typically make up just a fraction of their production costs.?

In St. Louis, Wednesday was the 16th day of triple-digit heat, and in Chicago residents not only faced the heat but also power outages from strong storms. NBC's John Yang reports.

Priceline?s Name Your Own Price bidding system was once the most novel way to find a discounted hotel room online, but a slew of innovative new booking websites and apps make it easier than ever to prevent buyer?s remorse. The seven-month-old website BackBid turns the Name Your Own Price approach on its head: instead of guests bidding on hotel rooms, hotels bid on guests. After you submit your existing hotel reservation and travel preferences to BackBid, the site invites hotels in the same area to make you offers for less expensive rooms or upgraded ones at the same price. (A five-star hotel was recently offered in place of a three-star property in Washington, D.C.) As long as you have a refundable reservation, you can cancel and book the new room.

Smarter Travel Media?s new Tingo website requires even less work. Book a room on the site (which uses Expedia inventory), and it starts monitoring the reservation on your behalf. If the price drops at any time, Tingo will automatically cancel your reservation and rebook you at the better rate. Best-price assurances are available on other online travel agents, but most either make you do the work (you have to cancel and rebook yourself, or you have to provide evidence of the lower rate) or will only match the price when another guest books the exact type of room for the same dates. Tingo has simplified the process considerably. Finally, deals still abound for last-minute bookings. HotelTonight?which posts cut-rate, same-night deals at noon each day?recently launched an enhanced iPad app with 360-degree photos of featured properties. Now available for hotels in more than 30 cities across the country, the service is gaining traction. Even so, it couldn?t help us with a recent attempt to book a room during the busy South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas; HotelTonight hasn?t launched there yet. But we did find several great deals on Kayak. Sometimes, a good, old-fashioned human search is still the best approach?at least for now.
